Responding to COVID-19

What an unexpected turn of events. Just a few weeks ago we were celebrating the return of baseball and the unusually baseball-like weather in the Pacific Northwest. Today we face an uncertain near future for our baseball and softball programs.

There is no playbook for these scenarios. Many of the college coaches I have reached out to are trying to lead their teams well while simultaneously working to understand the full implications of these decisions. I know our local high school and youth coaches are doing the same. Somehow we are all writing this playbook together.

We take seriously this pandemic and the toll it will take on our healthcare workers and system. The stories of what is happening around the world are heartbreaking and have caused us to consider deeply our role in slowing and responding to its impact on our community.

Responding to its impact

While baseball and softball are far from the primary concern in this season, it will become a concern once again. One group we recognize will experience the greatest impact of this season are our high school and college players who worked hard in the offseason to create opportunities to play at the next level. Less spring games mean less opportunities to be seen. We cannot bring those games back, but we can help our members adjust to the changing recruiting landscape.

Over the next few weeks we will provide recruit support times in our facility for high school and college players. We will provide you with video, data (Rapsodo, Stalker Radar, Blast Motion, etc.), and recommended processes for sharing your information with the people who are now trying to determine how they will fill out their rosters the next couple years.

Slowing its impact

In order to slow the impact of COVID-19 on our community, we will be instituting the following changes in our facility:

• Maximum of three people will be allowed per cage.
• Increased sanitization of frequently touched surfaces.
• Posted best-practices for mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
• Reduction of resources per cage to allow for more control of cleaning process.
• Zero tolerance policy for training while ill or with previous exposure to a confirmed case.
